Troubleshooting Invalid Domain Name Provided Messages

Symptoms

After applying the 7.7 update, you may encounter a situation whereby the Choose a Domain... step of the ordering process reports Invalid domain name provided response when selecting the I will use my existing domain option.

Cause

WHMCS Version 7.7 adds extra validation to help ensure that the own domain field is completed properly by clients. This is done by:

  1. Examining at the TLD Pricing configured in your WHMCS installation
  2. If no match is found, the list of whois servers is also checked

Solution

To allow a customer to enter their TLD in this field (in this example .com.jp), either record must exist.

1. Instructions for adding the TLD and pricing is located at https://docs.whmcs.com/Domain_Pricing#Adding_a_New_TLD

2. Instructions for adding a custom whois server is located at https://docs.whmcs.com/WHOIS_Servers

Once the TLD is added to either location, it can be used in this field.
